Zf gearbox hunting

Ok so I have been out and about scratching head and balls,iv changed the clutch on the van.....gear still dogy,I mended the selector as kindly advise by phil....gear still dodgy so I then proceeded to strip the gearbox to investigate inside, wasn't long before notice 1st and reverse gear selector fork( located at the worst place in the box( right at the back)has snapped).never mind we found the problem hoora!!.....so off I go to find the replacement,I'm quoted 73 pounds sterling on the phone so I have the miss us ring the guy up and pay by card as I was out at work,great......later turns out 12 pound delivery plus vat so now 98 pound!, miss us pays as instructed to do not to know any different,( is that a reasonable price?? I don't know I'm just glad there's light at end of tunnel) anyhow so in goes the new fork all looks well but once rebuilt still lil stiff,so back apart it comes and with even further scrutiny discover a spring come loose inside one of the cogs(release spring I think)....eureka ......the spring was loose the gear didn't function in turn the fork took a beating and snapped, sounds right sounds believable,so second time round in the same day the box is going together and we then realise the baulk ring inner thread has lost 50% of it's self,HAULT......3 or 4 phone calls later turns out that not such a bad thing as newer rings have slots grooved through them to allow oil dispersion so 50% thread on inner baulk ring helps oil dispersion, all is well...we then start to construct the box only to discover that the baulk ring itself has a crack,it's now I'm pulling my hair out, seems never to be,again 2 or 3 phone calls later I track down a 4 speed zf gearbox that I'm told will contain the baulk ring I'm after,ok clutching straws now but let's do it,so I drives me self down to the garage to pick up the gearbox with fingers crossed and hopes high that It will contain the end of my pain, meet Paul, nice guy,and he tells me 9 years ago or so bloke walks in garage with the 4 speed gearbox ask for repair and rebuild, garage does asked work but the guy never returns,so after moving about 10-15 other gearboxes we finally get to the dust collecting zf box, this where I'm hoping my vans days stuck on my drive are over, let's hope it got what I want.......but wait what's this it's not a 4 speed zf gearbox at all it's not what he told me on the phone it's not the only little chance iv got.....ITS BETTER...it's a zf s5 18/3 gearbox, that's right it's five speed zf gearbox exactly the same as my existing one fully repaired and rebuilt(all be it 9 or so years ago).
Makes me think of a funny question I once heard.....
Why is it always you find what you want in the last place you look

If it's been 9 years since the rebuild, I'd change the oil in it before fitting or at least before driving far with it. Just a bit extra cost, half an hour more work, but at least you know you've done all you could to keep this one working long and good.

I was told recently that its possible to convert the standard 4 speed box into a 5 speed. Is this true? If so who does this kind of stuff?

Regards
Gary

Vauxhall 4-speed box can have a Laycock J type overdrive added; requires mainshaft for overdrive but otherwise the gearbox internals don't need changing.

ZF 4- & 5-speed boxes are different animals: one cannot be converted to another.

Selector forks.

Hi,

I have first gear slector forks to spare, a first gear to go with it if you want, or a whole gearbox.
Just give me a shout.

Doug.
