Coolant loss/overheating

Yet another plea for help from a relative newbie - looking forward to being able to actually contribute some knowledge in the not too distant future...
Our 1983 2.3 CF 1 petrol (with LPG conversion) overheats especially in traffic. When hot and before it overheats, there is a mysterious leak of coolant in the area of the bottom radiator hose. Hose and clips has been replaced along with the radiator cap, and having read the posting about flushing the system - this has also been done. There is no airlock in the heater as the heater blows hot.
There is little sign of water movement in the header tank when the radiator cap is removed....so am I best advised to replace the rad and does anyone know a cheap supplier ? Roverland quoted an eyewatering 200 quid plus VAT for an exchange 3 core version (as fitted to diesel models.) Does anyone know if it's even worth going for the much more costly 3 core ?
Finally can anyone suggest a suitable donor vehicle for an electric cooling fan (NOT Kenlowe)?

There won't be any coolant movement in the header tank unless the thermostat is open (i.e. coolant hot enough to scald) or removed temporarily (better option if the cover bolts aren't seized).

Overheating usually results in the coolant boiling, audible with engine switched off, and being ejected via the radiator cap & overflow pipe (this assumes that the coolant level cold hasn't been topped up above about 15mm from the bottom of the radiator cap neck).

Temperature gauge can go to the hot end of the scale in standing traffic without there being a fault; in the owner's destruction book for early models the advice is to turn the heater to hot and switch on the fan ...

Radiator fan cowl ought to be in place for later plastic fan (fixed or viscous coupling type) to work efficiently but this is more important during summer.

Radiator leak appearing at the bottom could be the core itself weeping & previous attempts to seal up leaks may result in the core being choked inside. If the radiator is the original one then the core may be choked anyway.

Radiator with a 2-row core is sufficient for the slant engine & should be about £100 for a re-core at your local radiator specialist.

If you're stuck for space like I was,try a motorbike one.I paid £20 for a second hand one.

Thanks again for sound advice. I did get the engine very hot to check for water circulation so I guess you are right Phil that as the pressure builds, a blockage forces a leak somewhere. Bluebedouin's suggestion of a bike fan sounds well worth exploring too. Will report back on any progress.

I fitted a Renault Clio radiator and electric fan to mine, but the pipework was a little complex. The result is very satisfying, and the cost, 20 euros from a scrappy.

Think before you start fitting any mods to the waterworks you need to find the cause of the fault.

Whats the point of spending time and money only to find that the fault is still there but now its masked by the mods ...

Thanks for some further helpful suggestions. Gethin you are spot on about getting to the root cause first - though the two possible electric fan options remain attractive as we're planning a long trip into the Alps or Pyrenees to see the Tour de France in the summer and will need every bit of cooling we can get !
