Motorbike ignition system problems..

I'm helping a friend sort out his motorbike, a 1989 Kawasaki Eliminator, EL250, 250 cc.

We've narrowed it down to the ignition system. There's no spark at the spark plugs. If you remove the sparkplugs and hold the sparkplug cable near the engine block, there's a strong spark at more than 1 cm of distance.

With the sparkplug in place and the side of it touching the engine block, there's no spark. If you keep the entire sparkplug further away from the engine block, the spark comes from the body of the spark plug, not from the electrode! So it seems like something is shorting. Seems like more of an HT problem, but can't really figure it out. The ignition coils (2 of them) measure out fine (resistance on primary and secondary). Plug wires are old, but also tried other old ones and did the same thing. Sparkplugs are brand new, out of the box, supposedly correct type.

Any pointers?

Doesn't necessarily mean they're ok.
I bought a battery that turned out to be a dud.It worked initially but after a week wouldn't hold the charge.
I'd try another set just to be certain.

Sounds like faulty plugs to me your bound to have some cf plugs so why not try the spark with cf plugs itwill tell you if the original plugs are faulty.

Sounds like the plugs,I bought a new set for my bike three weeks ago and only one of them worked,Took them back and was told"It`s your bike mate we just don`t get returns on ngk plugs"finally got him to change them and the bike has never looked back.Just as blue said because they are new does not mean they are good.

Definitely the plugs, if thay spark like you say then the insulation is breaking down or cracked.

Tried some older plugs and same thing. Actually tried a total of 6 different plugs, and all do the same. So next one to check is the plug cables, but they are only sold together with the ignition coils, at a price of 93 euros per cylinder, locally... Thats 186 euros total.. We're gonna have to either get them from elsewhere, or be creative on this one..

No electrical faults detectable on the LT side. The plug wires though are as solid as can be due to old age, you literally can't even bend them, but somehow they used to work up until recently, and without the sparkplugs attached, they do give out a strong spark now.

If HT leads have shrouds that cover the spark plug insulators then check for tracking inside the shrouds.

Tracking & lost sparks going to a plug body may not be readily visible though; might need shrouds cutting off before getting a result.

rather than buy coil etc complete, you can just buy the HT lead which some motor factors sell as a loose wire. the lead in your coil with a little bit of force should unscrew and then you can screw the new in and make it the length you want, the plug caps can usually be bought at a motorcycle shop or gardening machinery repair centre, I did it this way on my Suzy. for a temporary check remove the plug cap and thoroughly dryit, replace it and connect plug to it then spray with wd40 to stop any more dampness getting in and see if this sparks it up.

Ok, it was the sparkplugs after all, new ones sorted it a bit (intermittent spark) and chopping off the shrouds sorted it even more. Now we need to adjust (and rejet) the carbs...

Thanks for the tips!!
