Nearly there! Trailblaze back in action...

Back in September i impulsively bought ANOTHER beddy (LHD on French plates), saving her from the scrappy. She was in lovely condition, I suspect having a re-spray at some point, but mechanically was in a sorry state. A jolly good scrub turned her from mould green to white again. And the the real work began.

First the fuel tank had to come off and had a good treatment of acid (from masonary cleaning fluid) followed by Por15 to seal it agains further corrosion. The fuel pump was past repair, so I fitted a Facet electronic unit under the chassis, and followed Phil's advice by wiring it off the oil pressure sensor so it will cut out when the engine isn't running. I also fitted a bypass switch for priming the float bowl. Oh, and a big pint fuel filter for the first few outings to catch any junk I missed.

I had a NOS solex 36IV carb sitting about from my other beddy - the carb in the new van was very grubby, and the idle needle was damaged, so I swapped the jets out to the new carb, which fortunatly has the correct choke tube (it was meant for a 2.0 HC engine I think).

Next came the fan belt and water pump - i couldn't find a CF pump so removed the pully and fitted it to a Viva water pump

new pump (left) and old CF unit (right)

Pully removed

New pump with correct CF pully. Shaft was subsiquently shortened.

New timing belt on

I don't really like fixed fans - they just waste energy when not required. i decided to ditch the stock fan in favour of two 8" electronic Pacet style jobbies, triggered off a thermostat placed in the radiator top hose.

the temperature control is mounted on the fire wall, next to the new fan relay and relay for the four way fuse box I added for extras - all switched from the original fuse box via the ignition circuit.

New fluids, centre propshaft bearing (modified to accept a Transit bearing) and filters finished the job. Brakes all inspected and bled.

A good check over of all the bouncy bits, an hour or two with contact cleaner on the switches etc and she was ready for the MOT....

And she passed - first time with no advisories! took her for a spin with the mrs and she pulled nicely (the van that is). As quick as can be expected from a 1.8. gear box is nice and smooth, and my modified prop shaft bearing seemed to be working fine.

now comes the tricky bit - I'm off to the DVLA office tomorrow with a mountain of paperwork to try and get her some UK plates - wish me luck!

the interior is standard, but needs some tidying. I have added mains hook up witha Zig unit and 240v sockets. i have also hidden a stereo in one of the cupboards, which can be operated from the drivers seat with a crafty little remote so she retains her original appearence.

Thanks. These old engines are really easy to work on. I learnt on bikes, but the knowledge just transfers straight across to the beddy. There are still loads of jobs to do like tapets etc, but they can wait for a free weekend. The best thing is use the info on here and give things a go!

The interior is complete, but not to our (read the girlfriends) taste. She has plans for new curtains and new seat covers, with a black and white checked floor. the leaky sunroof has stained the original vinyl over the years and made it look a bit tatty. I quite like the look, its very 70's - but she who must be obeyed has spoken...

SUCESS!!! I have in my hand the new UK V5 and tax disk from the DVLA - one very happy camper. The process was very straight forward and they didn't require an inspection of the vehicle.

Now just need to get some plates made up and wait for this bloomin salt to wash off the roads so I can take her for a proper test drive.
