Too old for reversing?

Having seen how tos on retro firring a revesing light, I bought the necessary switch and so period reversing lamps, but on a 73 Vauxhall 4 speed, cand find the plate to drill through to fit the switch! Theres a clip-on rectangular panel on the side of the box on top of the gearbox, but thats about it. Is mine too old to modify?

No you need to drill a hole in the turret adjacent to where the gear lever would sit when in reverse gear.

Somewhere on the site Phil has a photo/diagram of this.......

GM manual info -

The reverse lamp switch is screwed into a threaded boss provided on the special gear shift lever turret cover included in the reverse lamp kit.

When reverse gear is selected the end of the striking lever shaft contacts the switch plunger thus closing the switch.

When installing or adjusting the switch engage reverse gear with the switch lock nut in place.

With the wires disconnected screw the switch into the cover plate until the switch contacts the striking lever shaft.

Connect the wires then adjust switch position so that the contacts close and the reverse lamps light (key start switch in position 2 or II) then tighten the lock nut.

Getting a switch to work on an early gearbox with clip-on cover on the turret might be something of a challenge though ...

Thanks both!

The plate through which the reverse light goes is different on mine- its held in place by spring clips- I can imagine it will get forced off with a switch in place. Ill post pics as soon as I can! Perhaps I have an older type of gear lever turret?

That's the one: later turret with bolt-on cover introduced at chassis CY621900.

Would it be a straight swop for a newer turret?

It could have been worse- I was doing the tracking on the blade- turning top drum by hand but the tracking adjuster is on the back of the machine. As I reached round for it, my finger got trapped between the blade and the drum, and because of the tension on the blade, it gor pretty squashed. I never knew fingers could get so flat! Its now pumped itself full of blood but the bruisings gonna be interesting. Time will tell if the feeling at the end comes back. got some lovely piccies though!

Hello Mike,
I know what you're going through, I managed to smash the end of my thumb off whilst throwing a jack hammer onto the back of a lorry: smashed the end of the thumb and opened it up like a spoon. One overnight stay in hospital while they put it all back together again. Works a treat but have very little feeling in the end nowadays. The good thing was, though the nail had been pinged out, they managed to save the bed by sticking wadding where the nail should be and now the nail has grown back and that's where I get most of my feeling from.

Well, Rae, you make me sound lucky. Miraculously, neither the bone broke nor did I lose my nail. Amazingly my skin stayed largely intact but theres some interesting blisters as a result. The most irritating thing is that the weather has finally improved enough to get on with jobs on Moby, but Im gonna be pretty inept at playing with nuts n bolts..

Jumping in. my bloody thumb still hurts and dressings changed by nurse every three days. serious accident NO just a simple old fashioned metal splinter slightly larger than a pin head eight weeks now and a few more to go. I dont mess with hammers or band saws just play with metal splinters for a good job lol

Later turret with bolt on cover will fit but reverse detent assembly and selector striking lever shaft have to be removed first and to do this it's best to remove the countershaft gear cluster first ...
