Cooling problem

Copied from Introductions.

Andy B wrote:
Hi all, My name's Andy i recently (after waiting 25 years) got my first bedford (cf2 walker bus) and so far i am loving every minute of it, the only thing i find puzzling is the temp gauge, when the van is moving it is completely fine but when the van is still the temp gauge slowly creeps up to the red but it does not overheat (no bubbling noise) and still runs fine. Any body got any ideas.

Andy

First guess: slack fanbelt.

Should be able to deflect belt no more than 7mm using thumb pressure midway along the longest run between pulleys.

Second guess: duff viscous coupling on the radiator fan.

Fan should be audible when engine started from cold; noise should decrease within a minute.

Thereafter fan noise should be heard whenever moving off when the temperature gauge is above normal and noise will die away more or less in time with the gauge starting to back off down to normal.

Mine does this too. It doesn't like sitting motionless for very long. Temp gauge rises and the temperature of the cab increases. It reaches a plateau though and then stays there, not overheating, so I just live with it.

Its bloody useful in the winter actually. Keeps me warm.

Everything is doing its job properly (top and bottom hoses are warm fan seems to work well) and as soon as you get moving it cools back to under halfway (starnge)
