hi all

Hi, I joined as i'm currently doing some research on a 85 CF2 autosleeper before i take the plunge and buy one.

unfortunately I couldnt see a buyers guide on here to help me out.

Anyway I'm from the top of scotland and thought a CF would be a nice addition to the fleet for when we take the singer chamois to classic car shows.

Hopefully my next post i'll be showing off the new purchase

Hi, and welcome to the site. I too have an Auto sleeper on an eighty five plate, mine has the Clubman fibreglass body and is a fabulous beast.

What type of body does your intended have?

The top of Scotland.

Hi gerry m,

My next trip is up to the top of Scotland from Thurso along to Bettyhill, My old Bedford ain't much to look at but it gets me around the country.
It is an 1981 CF face lift with a pioneer body and the main weak areas on that model are the front end cab. wheel arches. cab floor. and door steps.
Noise checks are crank rattle, should be short before the oil pressure comes up, gearbox whinning, jumping out of gear, diff or wheelbearing whinning when hot, give it a good long run before buying.
Check it starts easy and pulls well on hills, watch the temp gauge for overheating, check reverse does not jump out or grind, check it over cold and then hot for oil leaks.
Hope this is of some help to you.

Doug.

As Doug said, look out for the dreaded rot in the cab area, the rest is fibreglass so is easier to repair and maintain. If it's a petrol, then it's the Opel engine which should be quiet and reasonably lively. Better still if it has the ZF 5 speed overdrive gearbox. Just make sure you check it over thoroughly and have a good drive before making a decision.

It's sounding good already. The CIH engine was used in a lot of Opel and Vauxhall vehicles in the 70's and 80's, and with a chain drive to the camshaft it's better than the usual cambelts of that era.

Check it out thoroughly and good luck.

had a quick look over today and looks good. Cab has some external surface rust on it but nothing untreatable.

Still has the original crockery as well!! Twin LPG tanks which also a bonus. Area above cab has been turned into cupboards but looks easy to return to standard. Unfortunately its a 4 speed, dont think thats the ZF box?

Wouldnt start in petrol but fired on the LPG straight away but the seller did tell me what he thought the cause was. It was his late fathers and looked very well looked after underneath. Its also been to Lands end from up here hear john o groats just because his father wanted a lands end sticker to go with the John o groats one lol

Hi Gerry m, welcome to the club. Are you sure that it is a Four speed box as on the five speed , first gear is across to the left and back and not across to the right and forward as in most five speed boxes. Most of the CF2's with manual transmission are fitted with the ZF five speed or the four speed with Overdrive box on the rear. Anyway i hope you enjoy your purchase, if you go ahead with it. regards Auldreekie
