Electrical Meltdown - 83 Autosleeper 12 fuse system

Yet again I find myself begging for help

All the fuses appear intact, but our van has dumped the following electrics:

Indicators
Fuel gauge, Temp guage
Dash warning lights (Gen, Oil etc)
Hazards
Won't run on petrol (only LPG) - carb cutoff solenoid ????

As a total klutz when it comes to electrics I'd really appreciate a Fisher Price guide to how to proceed - as my garage repair budget is bust as well !

Many thanks !

Well I'm a complete idiot with electrics, but if they were working and now not working, it must be a multiconnector. Too many items at once for it to be a single component. But, there again, I am a dunce with electrics, so probably best to wait for an educated reply!

Fuse box.

Hi Likaleica,

First do you own a muli-meter, if not get one a cheap one will do the job, next Bedford fuse boxes are set in a bad place.
What are the main enemies of electric's, dirt and water = rust and bad connections, The multi sockets are mounted just below the windscreen, this could mean water ingress, unplug check and spray with WD40.
Fuse box clean and check fuses and test with multi meter, remove fuse box to gain access to the connections behind the fuses clean and spray with WD40.
You have a Bedford CF that means you must have a large can of WD40 and a muli-meter, don't forget to check any earth wires to the body and battery.

Doug.

hi, my cf 1 ice cream van (only its not now an ice cream van) dumped the same electrics only today in a car park in aldeburgh it turned out to be a red wire with a spade connection that had disconnected from the altenator don't know if that will help. I'm also having a nightmare or as my girlfriend says a challenging time with all my electrics i clean the connectors its good for a day or so then the same again good luck

Hi I've been looking at the how-to section and fuses 3,4,5 & 6 are fed by a fairly heavy white wire this is an ignition feed wire I would check you have 12 volts there with ignition switched on,
Dave

Thanks for very informative replies - I'll check all those connections, dose with WD40 and replace the fuses - and if that fails, get a multimeter and probably electrocute myself !

Success ! It DID turn out to be a multi-connector after all - the one inside the steering column plastic shroud.

Strangely enough when still tearing clumps of my hair out and searching for inspiration I found a brand new unused multimeter in the loft that must have been my father's. Armed with that I could well be dangerous !

Well done.

Hi likaleica,

That multi-meter will be your best friend in no time at all, now all you need is a large tin of WD40 and you really have joined the Bedford CF club.

Doug.

I keep a cheap multimeter in each van and also in my motorbike tool kit. You can pick up slimline ones for about £3-4 on ebay. They are invaluable when fault finding, and can save you a hell of a a lot of time. I also have a Maplin automotive meter which I keep in the garage, and this does everything you will ever need on the beddy, including dwell angle and RPM - a very useful bit of kit.

Oh and no I don't work for Maplin ;-)
