Upgrading my CF 230 1976

Having got the old girl running nicely after buying her in October 2011, I decided... to completely replace the engine, of course

The little 1.8 just didn't quite have the balls to manage hills on the motorway, and the 4 speed box, although very smooth really needed another gear for anything about 50mph. so, a 2.3 lump sourced, and a ZF 5 speed box cleaned up and ready to "slot" in (cough - not as easy as it at first seemed) the end of the camping season meant it was time to get the lifting gear out...

So, with front cross member and engine out, the 2.3 needed a bit of preparation. New water pump, clutch with skimmed flywheel and correct spigot bearing, top water pipe (to suit the Bosch dizzy) exhaust manifold with new dual layer gasket, 92Deg thermostat and all sensors swapped for the nearly new ones from the 1.8. Even gave the block a clean and a lick of engine black.

And in it all goes with new engine mounts. Now just need to figure out this bloomin ZF input shaft!
