New/Old, Full/Empty, Dead/Alive

Hi everyone,

After a lot of work over the last week I've managed to strip out most of the interior of my van and a lot of dodgy electrics! At the end of last week I managed to get power back to the engine, and today I finally got the engine going. Considering it hasn't run for at least three years it goes great! Auto gearbox seems happy and I'm hoping I can run it pretty standard while I get to grips with the body.

I have a couple of questions though:

1) Can I replace the original air filter with something better? Not the old wire thing and maybe a whole new unit, box and all?

2) It goes but doesn't stop! After years of sitting around it appears the brakes aren't too happy. From the pedal I get nothing, nothing, nothing, then right at the end when it's at the floor, the tiniest hint of stopping power. What are the most common faults I can service? The handbrake doesn't work either!

Thanks,

Nick

air filter/brakes

Hi Nick, you can change the air filter.I don't Know if you can change the hole system ,you will have to contact Colin as he's in the Know. With the brakes you will need to overhaul the complet system.Possibly put new shoes all round, checking all pipes, master cylinder and slave cylinders. Sorry for the poor spelling.Cheers+Beers,Jim.

If you change the air-filter housing you could end up with iced carb.
there is nothing off the shelf that can be fitted due to the recessed position of the carb it self.
you could try using flexible tubing and a cone filter mounted on the inner wing though.

for the brakes id recommend fitting new pipes and cylinders all round.
depending on the state of the shoes you could re use them if they are in serviceable condition.

the only item thats really hard to find new is the master-cylinder, but if the bore is ok then there are kits available to replace the rubber seals.

remember that the brake fluid will remove paint and not good for your skin .
all fittings will be imperial, 3/16th copper pipe....
Never re use old fluid as it will have air trapped in the fluid
