Random carb question

What would happen if I tried to fit a pair of Stromberg carbs from a Vauxhall 2.3 onto my Bedford 1.8?

Would it improve throttle response and performance? (and drink petrol!!!!)

Would it explode in an amazing cloud of 40 year old debris?

If, for example, I was to fit a pair of these carbs and then switch my diff gears with those from a Cresta PC, to improve the ratio, would it move at all?

Or would it be great?

I realise there is a slim possibility that all these things might work, but then also a massive possibility that I'm getting the wrong end of the stick!

I fully appreciate that these might be slightly ridiculous questions, I'd just like to know.

Thanks, Nick

first of all there is no room to fit the carbs.
even if you managed to fit them by cutting the bulkhead
you would drink petrol and very little power gain as the engine is not designed for the carbs.

switch the rear diff will just bog you down as the engine has not got enough power to move the van

If you want more power and better top speed then you will need to fit the 2.3 and a twin downdraft carb, the 2.3 would have to be the HC version or it would be a waste of time.. better option would to fit a more modern engine and gearbox either diesel or petrol/lpg

Webber is the best,

but if you can find a manifold to take a twin 28/36 Webber downdraft then this is a fantastic mod as you have power when you need and economy when you dont

other option is to retro fit an injection system

Hey Gethin, were any Vauxhalls made with an intake manifold for the 1.8-2.3 engine and a weber 28/36 carb?

So, I went and got hold of a Weber 28/36, and managed to find a brand new standard intake manifold for my slant four. I'm going to try a few engine machining places and try and get them to fabricate a mounting plate for it and frankenstein it to the manifold with a larger (ovalish) aperture.

To make it work effectively do I need to do something about the small copper pipe that goes from my old Weber 34ICT into the oil breather pipe from the rocker cover into the air cleaner? Is that to stop the carb icing and would I still need something similar with the new one? I want to use a low profile K&N filter on top of it to fit under the standard engine cover and also improve it's breathing. Will this need any other additions or mods?

As the 28/36 isn't constantly running both chokes will I need to improve the exhaust manifold? A good slant four Victor FE exhaust manifold came up on ebay the other day with twin pipes output instead of the CF single and I bought it thinking I might need to improve the exhaust too. Would this be necessary or could I use the standard CF exhaust manifold. If I did use the Victor one what would I do about the stainless pipe section that's attached to it? Could I have a section of exhaust made going from the exhaust manifold to the standard CF silencer/etc, or would I need a different/larger exhaust.

I'm planning on taking off the cylinder head and having the valve seats done and new valves, and if I can find one putting on a newer cylinder head, but not sure if I need to do anything else.

I totally get that I should maybe plonk a newer motor in, but I love the simplicity of the Slant 4 engine that I can experiment with and try to get the most of, and it seems the basic Slant 4 lump is a solid beast.

Anyway, if I'm really barking up the wrong tree let me know, but if I'm heading in roughly the right direction any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Nick

the 2.3 came out of the factory with 240bhp / 180lb/ft as standard fitment for the hrs chevette. but this meant fitting a twin cam though ..

This engine was developed by Bill Blydenstein and I did the odd bit of tinkering with it. For a fast road/single stage car you should fit 48 DHLA Dell'Ortos and a set of Mr Blydenstein's cams if you can find them.the carb will have to be changed from a side draft to a downdraft though.

The engine was also used in the Lotus Sunbeam and the GM iron block is far stronger than the Lotus(907) alloy one.
The Lotus LV240 engine - based on the Vauxhall slant 4 block - was used to develop the head design for the 900 series Lotus engine. They used the Vauxhall block as a development shortcut when they realised the bore centres were pretty much identical, but only a handful of LV240 engines were built.

the standard 8v does produce some amazing power outputs (for an old engine design) - 180bhp on 45's!
