The tractor and engine club.

Hi to all,

This is a club of which I have been a member for quite some time and one of old tractor owners last year at Scone commented on the fact that at one time to be a member you had to be able to start your motor using a starting handle, "long before my time in the club" but it set me thinking.
In my early days in the motor trade a lot of the older cars, landrovers, and tractors still had starting handles even after they were fitted with electric self-starters, so I thought I would take a look at the possible adaption of my old Bedford back to a starting handle.
One of the local Bedford owners said "why" and another said your off your "chump" nothing I have not been told before, so I thought I would make a start this weekend.
And yes it can be done, first I had to make a starting dog for the bottom pulley and with that made up and working a treat "on a bench engine" the next problem was the radiator is in the way, not if the carrier plates each side are slotted which allows me to lift the radiator about two inches.
With this done all I now need is to make the hole in the bumper at just the right point and it should work "I feel a broken wrist coming on" quite a common injury in those old days.
Ah just one more thing to do and that is the make up a starting handle, so tomorrow I will get my friend the blacksmith to heat and bend the steel into a suitable shape, shank and cross pin are already done should be interesting.
"And very useful when that battery or starter let me down".

Starting handle.

Hi to all,

Progress has been made with the starter dog in place and today the starting handle has been made and tested on the bench engine, all fine so far.
The next part will be more interesting because the radiator has to be raised by two and half inches before holes can be drilled to allow the handle to pass though the bumper and cross-member.
Having taken a look at how the radiator can be moved out of the way with a minimum of fuss I hope to create enough space by just tilting the radiator to one side, which looks like having to cut a slot down the side of the heaters cold air intake.
We shall see how it all works out!

Beware the wrist!!! My first car was a Ford V8, 6volt electrics. The battery was not man enough to wind it, so I was a dab hand at getting it `on the spark` or it would hiccup through my wrist. Very damaging to a young man (cough)

Starting handle's.

Hi Bob,

My time started in a country garage so tractors were a common handle crank and much higher and nearer to the chin!
