head lights Today I have started to fit standard watts HID 6000 bulbs to my van.So maybe soon I can drive at night and see where I am going.I'll let you all know how I get on as is.CHeers=Beers Jim.---------------------- |

good luck be good to know how you get on ...are they the same bulbs only brighter or do you have to change things ??? i was gonna fit some spots to my but as there halogen i was told not to fit them as id have to change some thing on the wires or something lol ...i just drive the beddie i need help getting other things done lol

head lights Hi lads,Luckly I live just to high to need a boat but some of the lower villages they do need one.I have made a start on the h/lights as you will know none of the standard plugs fit so I am having to remake the joints.So there isn't a lot to tell at the moment.Does anyone know if the side light is part of the unit.Cheers Jim.---------------------- |

fitting HID to standard reflector headlamp is a sure way of getting 3point and a hefty fine as well as an MOT fail. all HID require self adjusting headlamp level and headlamp cleaning . also you nee projector style clear lens... |

head lights Thanks for the info Gethin.It would help if van testers would tell people this sort of info when we talk to them as I have spoken to a few testers about this up grade and none have said this.So Gethin what is the best up grade for the Bedford van?Cheers+Beers Jim.---------------------- |

Hi Jim I know of a couple of people who have had trouble with fitting HID's. They put the normal kit back in for MOT and then swap back again. There's some info on the legal side of it at the gov site HERE Basically the bits you need to read is :- '2. Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension - some expensive estate cars have "self-levelling suspension" and that is adequate). Also the dipped beam must stay on with the main beam.' and 'In summary: it is not permitted to convert an existing halogen headlamp unit for use with HID bulbs. The entire headlamp unit must be replaced with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs and it must be installed in accordance with the rules stated above. ' So, it looks like you either swap them back for the MOT and hope you don't get pulled by the law when you have them fitted or you take them back to where you got them from and get your money back

Extra lights. Hi to all,On the subject of lights and what is and is not allowed before the start of last seasons travels I thought it would be a good idea to have an amber flashing light because we Bedford chaps seem to travel too slow for all the other road users, so I asked at our nearby VOSA testing station about the rules for there use and was told that they could only be used on a vehicle travelling at 30 mph or less. So I asked how it was I struggled to get passed a tractor with double amber flashing lights doing 43 mph towing a trailer as long as a lorry, the guy smiled and said well if you get stopped because of using a flashing amber light your best defence is that it was in the interest and safety of other road users, but I very much doubt if the police will be in the least bit interested. doujoy ---------------------- |

Better BUT if you are going down that route it would be wise to re-wire the headlights through a relay and have the stalk dip switch operate the relay. The original headlights (I believe 55W?) will draw 8Amp (assuming 2 x 55W and 13.8V). 100W will draw 14.5A (2 x 100W and 13.8V). I'm note sure what the headlamp wire is rated at but I know that the dip switch is pretty unreliable at best so carrying 14.5A compared with 8A will reduce it's life and you could end up with what I had many years ago - a melted dip switch  A simple re-wire with a relay would fix that

I know it's illegal but as you say the police are not interested. I doubt if the police would bother with a CF with HIDs either but the MOT guy will

rewiring h/lights I have started to rewire the h/lights,as things are going it's very slow as I have times of loosing tools,relays and the wire I have just cut,Still this is part of me running a Bedford.We have to keep smiling.Chrrs+Beesr Jim.---------------------- |

Head lamps I have now finished the lights.I used 2 relays one switches between high and dip the other I put to switch the power on and off as the original switch is not strong enough.All seems ok now.Cheers Jim---------------------- |
