exhaust

Hi Graham, any good exhaust fitter can make one up for you as long as you have the old one.If not they should be able to fabricate one if you take the van to them.Cheers Jim.

Hey Guy,
That 4 branch manifold is something you won't find new off a shelf anywhere unless you get lucky and find a new old stock one. Hen's teeth and rocking horse come to mind. I know people who can make a new one just like it but it won't be cheap.
I'll have a look into exhaust systems from the manifold onwards as I'm sure we should be able to get something from any of the many motor factors.
I've got the problem that my original cast manifold is cracked and I can't get it welded so I'm looking for a replacement at the moment. Well I've been looking since spring when I did all the work on the engine and head.
Your best bet is to try and get a standard cast manifold too and then convert it back to standard. But don't through the 4 branch one away as I'd buy it off you just to keep as the pattern to get a new one made some day.
I might have a complete spare engine in the pipeline and let you know.
Frank

I've been going back through some of your old posts & found that you mention a Blydenstein head fitted to your engine.I have to admit I'm totally out of my depth here but would it not work out cheaper to fit a standard head & exhaust?
What benefits does that particular head give over a standard one?

That's why I suggested to get a stock cast manifold. The 4 branch manifold works fine for the tuned head, however there's not as much advantage having a tuned head in a heavy CF as for example having it in a Viva or Victor.
Guy's Blydenstein conversion also has a single SU carb rather than a Weber ICH. They're pretty much untunable unless you are knowledgeable about them and have a complete set of different needles to swap out and the right info on whether they are richer or leaner and at which position. I'm sure a Blydenstein tuned engine in a Viva or Victor would have had one or even twin Weber carbs.
Having had the head of on mine this spring and the unleaded conversion done I can honestly say a standard 2.3 CF engine runs just perfect and moves even a large and heavy coach build motorhome along without any problems.
I've actually had an early head converted for mine, which has smaller combustion chambers and it's also been skimmed. I bought it more by accident than looking for it and by doing so have now increased my compression ratio.
When I was doing the work I found a really helpful and knowledgeable company on the Droop Snoot forum. They are called Magard Sport and build HSR Chevettes for racing and rallying. They sell all parts you'll ever need for a Vauxhall slant 4 including under sized tappet adjusters and get their own gaskets made from OEM material rather than cheap thin paper like some of AB's and other motor factor parts. http://magardsport.com/pages/contact
I'm so pleased with my CF motorhome now, I'm seriously thinking of getting a CF1 panel van to use daily for work.
Sorry for the thread highjack, but I thought it might be some good info.

Hello Guy... What make of car does Bob have there? Must have a lot of punctures as that looks like a compressor with an air take off mounted above the nearside front wheel. Truly a custom built vehicle. The pictures show your 4 branch exhaust manifold is standing the test of time. Cant see any signs of failure in pics. Do you have a local exhaust specialist you could take the van too. Be a shame to loose the Blydenstein package. Are you keeping the dashpot on the SU carb topped up with oil as they can loose a lot of go if they get dry.

Regards Andy
