Electrical actuator on the side of the carb

Hi everyone.

A bit of advice here please.

I wanted to overhaul the carb on my 1980 CF1 and thought I would use the carb on the spare 1982 facelift CF1 van I have as a donor so as to minimise the time the van is off the road.

When I removed the carb from the spare van it has a couple of small differences the most striking of which is an electrical actuator type device attached to the side of the carb body.

Can anyone tell me what this is and whether I can just blank off the hole it went into?

Many thanks

Mike
PS happy new year!

If you take a look in the File Downloads section,CF Manual pdf's,Group 11 it covers both the Zenith & Weber carbs.

Idle jet holder

Mike,
This "electrical actuator" is a fuel cut off solenoid. If you take it out, you'll find the idle jet pushed in at the end of it, which the fuel is supplied through at idle.
It was originally fitted to shut the fuel supply off when the ignition is switched off and stop an engine from idling on when hot.
You can take it off but you need an idle jet holder like this
http://www.dellorto.co.uk/shop/weber-carburettors-parts/carburettor-parts-weber-carburettors-parts/ict-parts/idle-jet-holder-3/
to refit the idle jet.
Some ICH/ICT carbs of different cars, i.e. Land Rover never had the solenoid and just used the simple holder.

Thanks everyone for your help and guidance, I suppose the simple answer is to refurb the original carb rather than trying to deal with these differences.

Hello Mike.. To use the newer carb you need to run a switched positive feed to the solenoid. What about from the positive terminal on the ignition coil. Then the idle circuit will work as designed to prevent run on.

Hi Jim & Andy, many thanks for the info. I have the overhaul kit already thanks Jim.

I still cant decide whether to use the kit on the original carb or refurb this one with the solenoid on but thank you for the idea of where to take a feed from Andy.

Hi Mike, the carb with the actuator is the best as with these engines being so enclosed they tend to run on because they get hot,the cell will stop the fuel in to the engine as soon as you switch off so no runon.Cheers mate Jim.
