Tracks are rolling.

Hi to all,

After seven days of cutting drilling and chiselling both tracks are now finally done and ready to refit, did not realise just how seized they were until I seen them done and how flexible they are when able to move as they should.
Got one of the driving wheels repaired with all the rollers freed off, the other one was deeper into the marsh mud so a fair bit more damage done to it.
Tomorrow I shall see what I can do with its rollers, the five that have been sitting at the bottom of the drive wheel are really seized but they have been soaking in waste oil for past two weeks so here is hopping.

Track fit and adjustment.

Hi to all,

The tracks are now fitted and adjusted and running free, on more tight spots due to seized plates or rollers, floor is back in place and adjusters locked.
Refitted the fuel tank and welded up some loose roller bolts, so a good wire brushing to get most of the rust off and then start painting.
Should be ready for the classic rallies next year if I can find someone with a trailer strong enough to take the weight.
The passing interest of people some who don't even know what it is and some who have in their past life driven one on a fruit farm is amazing, I used to drive one of these Ransome's back in the late fifties and early sixties at the age of fifteen.

Magneto cutoff switch.

Hi to all,

I will have to fit a switch to cut off the magneto, there is a button on the side of the magneto but it is just quarter of an inch away from the flywheel, not good for the fingers I would to keep all ten if possible.
So an in-line switch will be a lot safer and easier to reach from the drivers seat.

Paintwork.

Hi to all,

I got some painting done today with an orange/red for the driving wheels, gave it all a good buffing down first but it will take a few coats to get it right.
However it does make a lot of improvement to the look of the tractor, if the weather allows I shall get a bit more done tomorrow it is really starting to look the part now instead of the rusty hulk of metal it was.

Painting progress.

Hi to all,

Between the showers of rain and wind I am close to three quarters round with the paint work, some new pictures need to be taken soon to show the improvements compared to the sad rusting hulk that we rescued from that marsh-land where it had been left to sink for five years into the muddy waters on the edge of Butterstone Loch near Dunkeld.

Small tracked tractor.

Hi Jim,

I thought you had stopped speaking to us on this site, your tank driving experience will be wasted on this small vineyard tractor if you go back a few pages you will find the facebook site to click onto and see the state in was in when I first got it out of the mud and marsh-land.
If you manage to make a visit in the summer that would be great!

Paintwork.

Hi to all,

Some more painting done today between the showers, it is good that it is quick drying paint and one coat seems to be enough to cover the bare metal.
Just some intricate bits to try and reach and once the clutch cover is back in place it will look complete, I have wired in a cut-off switch for the magneto as a safety measure.
Tomorrow I will give It a run just to check that the tracks are adjusted the same each side and then it can come down off of the blocks and stands.
The wind had ripped off the cover over night but things have calmed down now.

Bits added and more painting.

Hi to all,

I got some of the parts that were removed for access like the track centre cover plates refitted and the tool box and magneto cover back into place today after being second coated, so a few less bits laying around in the shed.
Lost spark but found a broken coil wire so most fix that tomorrow, made a start to getting the grubber cleaned up and painted so that will keep me busy for another few days, starting to look like it should now.
At these farm tractor shows they like to see a tractor with an implement attached and all the better for being made by the same manufacturer.

Research.

Hi to all,

I have set out to do some research on my old Ransome Simm and Jefferies vine yard tractor to verify its age and it is a 1953 model, while doing this I came across a site ran by a Dave Clark in Braintree Essex who has a registry of most of the tractors.
A large number were sold in France but they are found all over the world, he was very pleased to find that another one had been rescued up here in Scotland
he was also able to put me onto a guy in Bridgend in Wales who has brought up and has remanufactured parts for the Ransome.
So all very interesting so far there about 1500 on his registry world wide but he thinks there were about 15,000 made in Ipswich.

The ransome club.

Hi to all,

I have sent in all the numbers that I could find on the old tractor to Dave Clark at the collectors club and today he has verified the true year of manufacture which is 1950, from the engine number he was able to tell me that it still had its original engine.
So he will now add it to the Ransome register along with the other 1500 that are recorded on that site on which there only six other MG5's listed.
It would appear to be quite a rare model, first made in 1936 and the last model was made in 1965.

Hi Jim,

That is a new one on me at that age they would be more in need of an MOT, I think without the MOT system a lot of people would running death traps.

Implement work.

Hi to all,

With the weather turning to winter the tractor may well be left covered up and on stands and blocks of wood for a few months, inside work can carry on with work on the implements that came with it.
Still some work to be done on the tractor should the weather allow but up in this neck of the woods that is unlikely.

Hello Doug.. Any vehicle which is 40 years old after May 1st 2018 will be MOT exempt from that date. I have been following the debate as people have very strong opinions both for and against. I think its basically down to cost as I don't think the mot people want to pay to set up different catagories of mot as they will have to train the technicians and administer whatever they come up with. I followed a thread on the Retro Rides website and there are all sorts of theories as why this is happening. Most vehicles over 40 are cherished but there will always be someone who will exploit the rules. The main concern will be the definition of Vehicle Of Historic Interest, as how much original vehicle has to remain to qualify. Some vehicles only have the number plates and vin plate/chassis number left from original. Another can of worms for insurance as well.

Good points and bad.

Hi Beigebengy,,

It will work ok for people who maintain and look after there motors but it will be an increased risk on the roads for everyone else if unsafe motors are able to stay on the road without any checks on safety.

Tool frame.

Hi to all,

Just finished working on the tool frame for the tractor all cleaned up and ready to be used with a fresh coat of paint, The idea of the tool frame on these tractors is that once bolted to the tractor any implement can then be attached to it.
An old but very clever idea which was used before hydraulics came into use with Ferguson systems around 1947, later models of Ransome tractors had hydraulics fitted from around 1955.
