Getting back to work.

Hi to all,

Finally a break from the frost and a chance to get back to fuel adjustments and battery charging on that tractor, some small but important changes to get it running and responding better to the controls.
If that can be set up correctly I can then get it moved to a safer and less public place around behind the house at the workshop doors.

Hi to all,

Hope to chip off the ice clad cover on the tractor this afternoon and check to see if it will start, the last modifications have not been tested yet due to the weather and the lack of daylight.

Hi to all,

Finally got some work done with a made up throttle cable, so better control of the rev's to gain a slower tick-over without the centrifugal clutch driving which allows a clean engagement of the gears.
This will allow me to move the tractor safely with the throttle being able to bring the tractor to a stop with the engine running slowly enough to disengage drive.
My modifications to the carb seem to be working so pleased with that, so a bit more progress!

Some success.

Hi to all,

Throttle cable is an improvement but the carb changes a bit less so, they mean a nice slow tick-over but a lot less throttle to increase the revs.
And so the moving speed on the move is less variable, but a big reduction in fuel consumption and these engines were known for being quite greedy.
So still a fair bit more to be done but I will get there!

On the move.

Hi to all,

After three days of working on the tractor I now have good starting and clean engaging gears so it is now off the axle stands and driving as it once would have done over five years ago, only better!
Still a bit of work to be done mainly on the appearance but having drove it up and down the driveway a few time today I am very pleased with the progress, with the weather forecast for the next week or so I might have to build a snow plouge for the front of it.

Rev loss.

Hi to all,

The loss of rev's I have traced to the air filter element and by making a few well placed gaps in the foam that problem was solved, then the odd misfire turned out to be the spark plug so that was replaced which cured that problem.
It now seems the magneto has decided to stop out putting a spark so for now it is running on the coil ign. but starting and driving is first-class.
Fuel consumption is greatly improved through the SU carb setup and no leaks anywhere so seven months work is beginning to pay off, and the passing comments of those who thought I was mad seem to have stopped.

The next move.

Hi to all,

The plan to move the Ransome tractor round to my workshop door will be its first journey in the next few days, in the meantime I am on the lookout for a small plant trailer at the right price so that it can be taken to vintage shows.
Police have advised me that it is an easy target for theft where it is at the moment!

Sprung a leak.

Hi to all,

The old Ransome tractor has sprung an oil leak from the magneto gasket after todays little journey around the front yard, not major but it is a job for tomorrow, already made a gasket to replace it.
Apart from that it is driving well and all the controls are working as they should and it is ticking like a clock.

Magneto and oil leaks.

Hi to all,

The oil leak is cured with a new gasket on the magneto flange against the engine block and the contacts inside the magneto have been cleaned and reset so that the coil ign. can be switched off once the engine has warmed up, so very happy with that but not nice working out in the frost 8 degrees below freezing here this afternoon, (global warming).

Finishing touches.

Hi to all,

Apart from some paintwork which will have to wait until the weather gets a bit warmer there is just a few checks and adjustments left to be done, track space measurements between each segment and rubber spacer which should be 2 1/8inches
and a check of oil levels.
My next trial is to see how the tractor performs over very uneven ground and large stones so that I can set the track tension to suit all terrain.

Lack of power.

Hi to all,

My trial over rough ground was less than impressive because of a lack of revs, a carb. problem with air fuel mixture.
It is not the best example of an SU carb that I have picked up and today I have made some alterations to the linkages jet and piston which has helped a bit, but I think another less worn carb might have to be found.
However it does drive and is running and starting as it should and the gear shift is working smoothly and quiet to engage, another look at the engine breather system might improve things.

Just when you think you are close to finishing.

Hi to all,

Tuesday the unthinkable happened my tractor lost all compression after running for about an hour, compression reading was just 5PSI turning the engine by hand.
Normally that reading is about 65PSI, so after checking the valve clearances I decided the cylinder head had to come off to find out what was going on.
On an old engine such as this one there is a risk of breaking head bolts, and sure enough one snapped, but after a good look over I found what seems like exhaust putty which was stopping the valves from seating.
With that dug out and the surface cleaned up the next job was to drill out that broken head bolt and rethread the hole in the barrel, that was a long and careful job because I was drilling steel threaded into alloy.
But once done and a suitable bolt found to replace the broken one I was able to reassemble the top end of the engine, and sure enough compression returned but starting meant a lot over starter handle turning followed by some spitting and back firing, but it did burst into life.
Having decoked while the head was off using a cleaning liquid there was a fair bit of smoke and some soot pushed out of the exhaust, but after running for half an hour the engine settled down to a tick-over.
So lets hope there on more nasty surprises!

Old engines.

Hi to all,

As I am sure you all know old engines can throw up unexpected problems at any time and this old tractor is no exception, thinking I had found and cured the cause of low compression I put the engine back together and it started and ran, problem solved!
But the next day no compression again so head scratching time, strip down again because the wet test showed no improvement with oil down the cylinder and that meant piston rings or valves not seating.
And sure enough the exhaust valve when closed was still allowing a 2 thou feeler to slide underneath, the build up carbon had to be cleaned out and the tappet gap was reduced and compression the reading came back up to what it should have been. Phew!

Up and running.

Hi to all,

The tractor is now back to full running order but I think a regular treatment of Redex through the fuel to clean the upper cylinder area and keep things moving is a must from here on in, the SU carb. will also need so new parts to get the mixture and throttle power to stay constant.

Got the needle.

Hi to all,

Erratic tick-over cause found, bent needle in to SU carb and checked in a drill chuck so new ones ordered and should be here by Wednesday next week.
Waiting for the weather to get more spring like so that I can finish off the paintwork.

Needle work.

Hi to all,

With the needle-work done and the carb. back together I now have good control of the fuel mixture and the tick-over, the home made injection system makes starting so much easier, up and running in just six turns of the engine instead of twenty six.
A better range of engine revs. so the next test is to see how it drives and what the power out-put is like!

Test drive.

Hi to all,

Yesterday I had a short test drive on the tractor and finally got the engine speed to drop without stalling and allow a clean gear engagement and a controlled drive, bearing in mind this machine has on braking system so throttle control is all you have to move or stop.
Today once the frost lifted and the sun made an appearance I got a start to the second coat of paint, a lot more still to be done to make it look like it should but I am getting there.

In the right place at last.

Hi to all,

Finally got the old Ransome tractor around to the workshop area behind the house so much safer and easier to get working on, not totally happy with the running of it yet as it seems to throw up one problem after an other.
So still enough to keep me busy and thinking!

You have to see the funny side.

Hi to all,

I thought it was about the old Ransome tractor was driven up the footpath and around the back nearer to the workshop, because of the drop down from the pavement I made a ramp out of scaffolding boards and took the gate off to give me enough width.
So I got the old tractor started and let it warm up then reversed it across the driveway so that I had room to turn towards to the street but had to take a second cut at it to get passed the Bedford.
Reversed back a couple of yards but the throttle jammed, (bearing in mind this machine stops on throttle close down because of the centrifugal clutch system)
I was heading towards a three foot drop over the top of a wall.
So I decided very quickly that this 73 year old guy was not going to fair too well under 15cwt of steel tractor so I jumped off and let the old tractor do its own thing and over she went, landed on its side on the footpath and stalled.
It was then a case of jacks and blocks of wood to get the old girl back onto her tracks, not quite how I had planned the journey but not too much damage done to the tractor and none to me I live to fight another day!

After the tractor tumble.

Hi to all,

I have got the old tractor back up and running after its miss-hap but had some trouble sorting out a misfire and found it to be the brand new spark plug just fitted two weeks ago.
My spark plug tester is an old magneto which spun by hand shows what quality of spark you have and the new plug was shorting off to the casing, once replaced the problem was solved.
So now colder spark plug has now been fitted.
