My new 1984 CF2

HALOOOOO

Hi all..I'm so excited I could burst! Picked up my 1984 CF2 Holdsworth camper on Wednesday evening. Got a ton of work ahead of me but I'm sharing her with my parents so we will split the costs between us.She is in great condition overall, but has been "modernised" so I need to strip her back a bit and do the decent thing, that is, remove the silly plastic hub caps and rub back the awful "white transit van" paint job! I am a real newbie so any help and tips from you enthusiasts out there would be gratefully received. I think there are a few enthusiast in my area (Portsmouth)so get in touch. I really need two rear doors any tips? Cheers chaps, Melissa

Melissa,

Hope you have a lot of fun with your van. It will let you down at the most inconvenient moment so make sure you have AA/RAC etc. cover to bail you out.

The rear doors in good condition are as rare as hen's teeth - keep an eye on Ebay and on here but it will be quicker to get a bodyshop to sort them out. I hope rubbing back the paintwork doesn't reveal any nastiness or filler but I suspect it will, so be prepared for that too !

If you intend to make any changes to the interior, the Self-Build Motor Caravanner's Club has a huge amount of info online. (Google SBMCC for the link)

I highly recommend signing up for the CFUK Club - it's only 8 pounds a year and gets you excellent discounts on insurance and parts. The first time something breaks on your van, or you need a part, you'll recover the cost of membership.

Hopefully we'll see you at a meet this Summer :)

Up grade to a card holder.

This will get you loads of discounts as well as access to areas that you cant get to now.

First port of call:

http://www.bedfordcf.co.uk/membership.htm

Champagne, caviar, dancers in cages, all the usual. Alex (Big Mac) handles the membership and he's very quick to get things sorted.

Hopefully we'll be able to get some 'workshops' sorted out this Summer - it was raised last year, but was a bit cold, windy and wet to do anything about it. Basically a meet-up, chilled wine and beer, burnt burgers and sausages and a chat + practical from one of the members about a particular area of Beddy ownership/maintenance. Followed by more cold ones, a Q&A session and general feeling of smugness that you can buy 15 Beddies, lots of smiles and waves from people as you go past, for the price of one modern Talbot.

I do electrics + interior wiring; we were hoping to get basic engine maintenance and bodywork meets too. Nothing too formal (god forbid !), but enough to make you feel confident to not have to visit a garage or call in a specialist if you want to do something or something goes wrong.

That feeling of smugness evaporates pretty quickly when the 30 grand Talbot cruises past your stranded Beddy on the hard shoulder http:// http:// http://

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for that Magnox, I feel comforted by your optimism that I will be stranded in some far away (if I ever get that far!) Layby. LOL. I have every faith in "Bella" as my daughter has chosen to call her!
Some meets would be good...the cold ones sound good too,and I won't have to get a taxi home....Wow I'm appreciating "Bella" already and we haven't even left home yet!!
I'll try and become a fully fledged member by the time the bank holiday is finished...TTFN.
P.S. Who has to dance in cages? Not all the Bedford CF members surely, or is it some strange initiation ceremony ? Please don't put a scary image in my head ! Ha Ha.

Heh - I sound like I'm putting them down - I'm not. There are 3 on my drive ! A well-maintained Beddy is very reliable; it's the abuse that previous owners have given them (e.g. not using fuel additives, not changing the oil and renewing the engine electrical components that wear out) that generally causes most problems for new owners.

Occasionally, things do go 'bang', but even a job like changing the engine can be done over a weekend if you have knowledgeable folk around. A lot of the discussions on the board can seem a bit technical because some people here know a lot.. and I mean a lot... about how they were built and can fix dead gearboxes with a bit of melted coat-hanger and some chewing gum etc. I do not include myself in that category ! I think most of us find a balance between doing the work ourselves and getting someone else to do more tricky jobs.

It's a phrase I've used a lot before, but it's worth repeating: your Beddy is a classic car with a house on the back. Think of it like that, treat it like that and you'll be happy. Some parts are difficult to get, you need to understand electrics, plumbing, carpentry, etc. etc. Most of us can't manage all of those skills but there are some annoyingly gifted people in the club who can

The best thing about the club is that they are always willing to share.

Keep an eye on your roof seals, change the oil every 5000 miles or six months (overkill possibly), budget for new points, condenser and rotary arm every year, drive it gently and Bella will be less likely to dump you on the layby. And if it does happen.. sigh gently, slip into the back, brew a cup of tea, relax and read a book or listen to some music whilst waiting for that recovery truck

You know, the way you make a hard shoulder sound is rather relaxing anyway ,so I'm sold already ! I'm really lucky to have a little brother who has owned beetles since he was 14 yrs old. He recommended me to a Ford Transit (boring) or a vaxhall Bedford so that any major flaws would be easy enough to sort with elbow grease and knowledge. He has a VW bus he is stripping at the mo' but will help me out if I beg!
I'm driving up to Scotland in August anyway, but am not sure if I should risk driving Bella that far. I seem to be the only one who understands the gearbox. !

Nice to see that your now a cardholder.

Which engine and gearbox have you got fitted?

As yours is on the change.

It could be either a 2.3 facelift or a 2.0 mk2 ..

Gearbox's arnt usually that odd though unless you have the dogleg 5 speed then yes that takes some getting used to...........

welcome to the love of bedfords , more character than a volkswagan , less scene tax and cheaper than a vw for a excellent condition one , my eldest brother has just completed his 67 splitty and after buying it for 12 grand he ended up replacing both side rear panels , rear coners ,spraying it, then he had to actually buy front seats , bare spring bench seat without covering 200 quid , then build his interior , so far around 20 grand ish for a van the will almost fit in the back of my cf2 panel van. lol. 12 grand for a near bare shell. also you can customise a beddie and it dont look stupid , the engines where it should be ie in the front. have fun with your van , you wont regret taking a beddie on.

Thanks all for your warm welcomes, I fully intend to enjoy her. I've only managed to drive her twice so far becase she's kept at my parents house and I work all week (boo). I do intend to customise her slightly, but not so much that I will take away the character of the old girl.

Sorry Gethin I didn't answer your question. I haven't received the V5 document back yet but I believe I have a 2260cc diesel engine with a Garrett turbocharger system fitted. The gears are standard but there is a real knack to getting it out of reverse and back into gear again, I don't find it a problem but everyone else seems to struggle.
On the subject of the engine...do you think it is possible to use a vegetable/diesel mix to help me budget for the longer journeys ?:# Thanks for your time, Melissa

Looks like someone has fitted a frontera engine in there then.

Using a mix is possible so long as the veggie oil has been properly treated.

Is your gearbox a 5 speed or a 4 speed?

Hi Melissa. Nice to have another girly (and co.) on the scene. I hope you have great fun in your camper. We have had our first few weekends in our machine and it has been great even with one husband, three little ones and a large german shepherd dog and we all fit in! Much bigger and better than a VW! Happy camping

Its unusual for someone to do that conversion and leave the 4speed box in place.

The tend to put the 5speed in as well.

Try changing gears while the engine is not running.

If this is easier then you prob got clutch drag..

You could get away with adjusting the clutch cable
