Replacement carpet

Restoration work on a Bedford CF is never as simple as you first expect.

When I bought my van the cab had some pretty horrible foam backed brown carpet, which had now been in there for two years. The cheap backing meant that it never stayed flat and the backing left powdery residue all over the cab floor. I finally decided to change this in November 2008.

I purchased a 2m x 2m remnant of heavy duty rubber backed carpet from Carleton Lord Carpets in Bridgwater for £20 and set about removing the seatbelt mountings, seats and trims, only to find that the cab floor had more rust than I expected it to. I wasn’t too bothered about a bit of surface rust, that was easily treated. More worrying were the two holes in the floor (as per the photos below.) One hole was by the drivers’ side seatbelt mounting, and the other directly below one of the seat mountings. At this point, I was glad I never had the misfortune of being involved in a crash, not only would I have kept going through the windscreen, but I would have then been hit on the back of the head by the seatbelt!

3 hours with the welder and some pretty thick pieces of steel plate restored the van to a roadworthy condition. All I had to do now was fit the new carpet.

Using the old carpet as a template, I trimmed the new carpet to fit around the handbrake, gearstick, engine cover and wheel arches. Holes for the fixings were made using a corer and an old soldering iron. The old seat mounting bolts were replaced with new M8 bolts, 25mm washers and nyloc nuts, and the seatbelt mountings were cleaned up and replaced.

I had to destroy the old seat belt in order to get it out of its rusty mounting, so I bought a new seat belt mounting from my local breakers, mated to my existing seat belt and treated it to keep the rust at bay. Here are some pictures of the (almost) finished product.

Still to do:

- Trim the vertical edges of the footwells for some much needed soundproofing
- Fit new rubber matting to the floor of the steps
- Fit the plastic trims which sit either side of the seat runners. I bought them ages ago on ebay and they are lying around in my workshop somewhere
- Treat the underside where I cut away the old metal

Looksreal good

Foam back carpet will always disintegrate as the foam dries out, and then becomes water absorbent - very rust friendly

That looks really nice. Very clean job and I'm glad you sorted out your welding bits. Did you manage to repair those other bits on the sills too?

Thanks guys. To answer your questions:

Scoobydoo - I'd love to say otherwise but the sills still need doing. Any takers?!
Gethin - I don't know what the seats come from, but if anyone can enlighten me that would be much appreciated.
Allan - Rust friendly indeed. Ed's advice is don't buy foam backed carpet for your Beddy!

The flooring was done before I bought the van. There is a cut out by the side door to allow access to the battery. Photo to follow...
