A F******* Bedford Ah Dinna Believe It '

I worked in 70's for an engineering firm in Manchesters Trafford Park that purchased a Bedford Diesel CF2 Pickup truck to run around for spares Etc. , on setting sight of this new delivery , the chief mechanic went into a strop ranting about a pile of crap , Blah ,Blah , I was quite surprised about this outburst and when I later enquired why he did'nt like the vehicle said that when he was in the RAF they were the biggest pile of S**T ever to grace the earth , well as I was the driver who had to drive it , I found it completely fine , how odd I thought! . ..........Thirty years later scrabbling underneath a 82 Bedford CF 250 Camper , knuckles scraped covered in oil unable to undo things without taking off other things ... thinking "what F******g Idiot design this piece of crap" when 'Sandy McKie" the head mechanic from the old days came into my mind and said....."I F****** Told you so"

"God Bless you Jock I Should have Listened "

Only Kidding I Think !

Given that it's a 40 year old design, I don't think it's too bad.
most Japanese vans are far harder to work on, and the worst I have ever come across is a New Beetle.
But I grant that it's hard to keep your perspective when you are covered in grease and trying to undo something tricky.

Th biggest satisfaction is knowing that you did it yourself - and it works

I just think that designers of trucks and vans have never seen a spanner let alone how to use one never mind a driving licence! Take the venerable TK truck , great to service with flaps at the side but to drive you had to hunch down like a hunchback, the roof was so low , and if you wore a helmet [tin hat] in one of the army ones your eyes rattles around... I blame them for me having a bald head in later life !

I was a Fireman in the RAF. One bright spark of an MTO decided that we had to undergo 6 monthly driving assessments in line with MT drivers.
We were driving Thornycroft tenders up to 24 tons, where you had to stand on the brakes. So for testing they gave us - TK's.
After at least 4 instructors were bounced off the windscreen they gave up on it

The grazed knuckles are a tally showing the amount of days you've worked on your van!

I agree with Jeff - the design is a good one for its day. Just find a section of sweeping B road and throw the van round the bends - it copes amazingly well for what it is.

Having just stripped out all the galvanised brake pipes, I was impressed by how much room there is under the thing! You could camp underneath, let alone in it. Bit tight in the engine bay, and I can't see how you could pre bend and fit the brake pipes without removing everything.!
