Allan & Kim's Pioneer Resurrection.....

Good afternoon all,

Further to earlier postings under 'What a Blast!!!' and elsewhere, Phil Bradshaw and I have arranged with Allan and Family to 'set to' and get their Pioneer up together for them to try and enjoy some time away in it this year.

Phil and I will be paying a visit on the 2nd May with a view to having a recce to evaluate what needs to be done and we will post our findings and progress here as we go.

This is where the Appeal comes in:

We intend to commence procedings on the 12th June (both Phil and I will be staying all that week) and really hope to get the van well on the way to completion by the following Sunday.

We would welcome ANY help during that week if you could spare some time. Many hands CAN make light work and there are plenty of jobs where just one or two of us will find it difficult to cope!!

One week is not long to rebuilt a coachbuilt motorhome, but we would like to try and achieve it - properly and safely - so that Allan and Kim can enjoy it with their children.

There is a lot to do...........but we feel that with the attitude and generosity of the members of this great Club we can do it.

If you feel you can help, and would like to participate - in whatever capacity - please do let either myself or Phil know, or post a quick reply here.....

More details will be posted as and when we have done the recce.....

Good morning all,

Well, the recce went well..........although poor Allan was laid up in hospital all weekend so missed out on the excitement.

The purpose of the weekend was to get beneath the skin of the problems (literally!!!) to ascertain what work would be required and what materials would be needed.

Phil will post findings and progress on the mechanical side of things but to begin with, here is what happened that weekend and what we found:

































PRELIMINARY MATERIALS LIST:
2no 1200 x 2400 x 3mm ply for ceiling
34no 30 x 30 x 2400 planed timber for battening (may only get 34 x 34, but try for 30 x 30)
7no 70 x 30 x 2400 planed timber for battening
3no 1200 x 2400 x 3mm ply for walls
5no tubes of gripfill builders adhesive or similar
200 ˝” crosshead wood screws
small aluminium or zinc domed crosshead screws ˝” long (maybe 100)
4no tubes of sikaflex 512 (o’leary’s)
3no rolls of sealant 1”wide (o’leary’s)

SCOPE OF WORK
prop up the roof
remove the ali side
remove the wardrobe (cant get it out without destroying it otherwise – which I don’t want to do as it can be used as a template to build a new one)
cut out the rotten timber
fabricate a new side off the vehicle
lift up the new side and secure in place
secure roof edge to new side
re-fit ali cladding with sikaflex on all joints
insert new roof timbers and introduce new cross bracing to cut down on flexing
clean up trim strips and re-fit with new sealant
refit all external fittings with new sealant
build new furniture……………..

Sounds so simple when it is written down.....
As you can see - a fair bit of work required!!!!!

NOW THE APPEAL:

Phil and I will be at Allan's from the 12th to the 20th June to get the bodywork sorted as a priority to the mechanicals...

We WILL need help with this. If you feel that you can spare a few hours (or a few days), and fancy a bit of fun with a couple of mad 'Bedheads', please do let us know....

We have the tools - its the hands we need!!!!

There is much fabrication needed - as well as the framing we would like to be able to get the furniture sorted at the same time, along with the plumbing and electrics.

If we can get all this done in the week, this will leave Phil free to concentrate on the mechanicals in his own time..

Hello lads,
Good luck with the mammoth task ahead of you. As like Margaret's little problem, it will be very informative & inspirational for other members that are suffering with damp vans.

Mechanicals

Wheels off inspection revealed remarkably little to worry over: condition all round fits with 29,000 mile on the clock I reckon.

A bit of tin worm at the bottom of the driver's side A post (hinge post) -



Underneath, the box section closing panel formed by the front part of the rocker panel at the bottom of the A post -



Patchable, but if I can lay my hands on a sound rocker panel then it could be worked in without removing the front wing; makes a better job than patching.

Other than that the list is relatively short -

Steering lock sticking. Fixed on the day: dismantle ignition switch, apply Vaseline to ball bearings inside.

Driver's door fouling wing rear edge: apparently it's always been like this, i.e. not related to A post rot (A post doesn't move anyway); sorted on the day by re-aligning the door.

In the process I found that the door damp check film is missing (this protects the door card from getting soggy) & it's probably best to assume the other door is similar. Take one polythene bag & some gaffer tape...

Left side engine mounting is soggy & tearing. Cam cover oil leak above...

Both rear brake cylinders seized. Might be repairable if the pistons can be extracted & bores honed for new seals.

Brake pipes need renewing: most of the original steel ones are thin at unions & copper ones on the rear axle are mis-shaped & aren't too well secured; probably have hastened cylinder seizure too.

Radiator top bracket detached from top tank. Solder repair should sort it.

Exhaust tailpipe needs an extension to clear the body side.

Exhaust front pipe-manifold flange secured by very rusty steel nuts; studs look ok so it would be worth fitting brass nuts if I can get the steel ones off: stitch in time rather than let the steel nuts waste away to loosening the flange.

Front number plate is cracked (MoT test fail these days).

Wiper blades need renewing.

Auto gearbox oil is brown on the dipstick. At least an oil change is required & the suction screen probably needs cleaning too but that will need a new oil pan gasket.

Looks like you have a fair bit to do! On your shopping list I didn't see any mention of replacement edge trims. If you do need to replace these, where can they be obtained from? As to fixings do you advocate stainless, zinc plated or brass? I am not suffering so much from damp, more of a case of damage to the vertical edge strip where my Mum backed into the garage gutter!

Hi Nick,
The plan is to remove the edge trims VERY carefully, so as not to damage them, clean them up and re-use them. Very difficult, if not impossible, to find an exact match....

I would guess the vertical edge strip you mention is a 'half round' type with screw heads visible along the centre line? Or half round, again, with a plastic insert covering the screws? If so, then replacements can be got from O'Leary's

On the fixings front I would go for stainless steel followed by brass. Plated parts can loose their plating too easily..

Carl, Thanks for the advice. I am after a sort of three quarter corner type. O'Learys has something that looks similar but it not dimensioned. As they are fairly close to me I will probably go and check it out. I don't fancy the postman pushing 2 metres of aluminium through the letterbox.

UPDATE..............

Good afternoon all,

Following the sad loss of Allan a few weeks ago, all work on the van has been stalled.

We have a dilema!!

Kim is unable to drive due to medical reasons, and therefore wants the van 'shot of' as soon as possible.

Mikeyboy has been trying to find a suitable location to store it temporarily, but has been unsuccessful.

Phil Bradshaw is fully committed on other projects and with work.

I am completely snowed under with work, and have used the majority of my annual leave available to move house recently.

As can be seen, there is a problem as to what to do with the van.....

Mechanically, she is in good order - as is the cab steelwork (although this could do with a respray). The caravan part, however, is U/S. It needs a complete rebuild.

Mr BG (member on here and friend of Kim) is obviously keen that this situation is dealt with quickly.

IS ANYONE HERE WANTING A MECHANICALLY GOOD BEDFORD CF FOR A VERY GOOD PRICE???

I am not putting a value to it - that will be between Kim and the buyer.

It is a good automatic, petrol CF - just the hab unit is duff.

IT NEEDS TO GO - AND I CANNOT GET BACK TO CAMBRIDGE TO DEAL WITH IT / STRIP IT / MOVE IT ETC......

If anyone here can assist, or wants it, please do get in touch with Mr BG via the PM, or drop a message here (please copy me in so that I know what is happening.....).

If no-one wants it - it will go for scrap..........very soon I'm affraid!!!!

Final update

Just to bring everyone up to speed with regards to Allan's old van. Some parts are being removed this coming weekend and on Monday morning the scrapman is collecting the remains.
