Phil, just noticed that your wheels are looking a bit chipped. Stamford Blast Cleaning Ltd@hotmail.co.uk were offering 4 wheels shotblasted and powdercoated forĀ£140, if you were at the show... hmm. think I saw you there...

I actually got quite good results using the multi pack imitation superglue that you find in the pound shops: seems to work just as well.

Agreed; got some in the van on a permanent basis - they don't go off until opened. (5g bottle was getting on the old side so that got used first.)

P.S. Is your wing mirror still staying on?

Yes; wasn't too sure about water resistance of cyanocrylate so got a spare arm just in case ... Sod's Law the old one will drop off today now it's been mentioned.

It's the genuine CF textured look ...

If I do get round to getting the wheels cleaned up then there's a place locally that will shot blast wheels for not a lot.

After that it'll be mk 1 paintbrush so that inevitable chips & scrapes can be covered over if they worry me.

One step forwards, two back

Emptied the back of the van for a clean start in fitting out the back a bit better & found that the bulkhead needed straightening. Everything in the back of the van must have slid forwards in the shunt: bottom of the bulkhead was one great big bulge.

So, out came the seats from the cab for some walloping room ... to find that the sound deadening matting was wet and the paint underneath was bubbled and soft as if attacked by paint stripper.

After some toil with wire brush -

Hmm. It's just the areas where the matting was wet that are affected. Makes me think that something in the matting that leaches out when it's wet isn't paint friendly because everywhere else is still sound.

There's no leaks, at least none that showed up in the downpour soon after I'd done scrubbing the floor, so it looks like what's trodden in & gone through the holes in the original rubber mat may be what's made the matting wet.

Had a think about what to do while bashing the bulkhead back into shape so that the uprights on the back are square with the floor -

With only half the day left & rain preventing both cab doors from being open to get at the steps & door frames properly a de-rust & repaint of just the cab floor & seat bases to match got to be the choice (blodges are rain spots on the camera lens) -

At least I can get the van usable in the morning now so that I can make it to the timber yard even though the seats will have to come out again to make everything else tidy round the bulkhead.

Oh bother

Puddles collected both sides overnight -

Traced to the screen leaking again, probably from run-off from the roof, & water dripping through at the outer ends of the screen vents.

Something else for the ToDo list along with another re-paint of the floor when it's not so damp & dismal: too much dust caught in the paint & rain spatter from forgetting to close windows once the paint was on hasn't helped.

Meanwhile dodging more heavy showers is making things slow putting the cab back together minus floor coverings ...

Ouch, heartbreaking crash pictures... Good thing that CF's were built stronger than new Toyotas.

Good to see you're getting it sorted though. Will insurance pay out if you do the work yourself? What do you tell them to make that happen?

That reddish color looks really good!

I'm not claiming because the total outlay is less than the policy excess & it also side-steps the insurers trying to write off the van because it's old ... not been able to find anyone to insure it agreed value as a classic because it's a panel van.

Very Big Grin

Re-discovered how well a SWB CF can perform when it's empty ... not done much for fuel consumption with the tendency to clog it on open roads (or for some loose bits falling off meanwhile, exhaust tailpipe for one) but the van won't stay empty for long so I might as well have some fun while I can. Lots of fun.

Compared to all the SWBs with single taper leaf rear springs that I've had over the years - all of them could be, er, rather lively - having multi-leaf rear springs seems to make the back end a bit more predictable. Even with the tyres at 30psi the thing can feel a bit like a roller skate at times on Lancashire's bumpy roads...

On vehicles that are designed to have the rear axle loaded heavily, when it's unloaded it does not have enough weight on it to push the wheels against the tarmac, making it very nose-heavy and of course, a lot more power to spare without having 1 ton of gear to push.. It's more to do with tires though, in my experience. Good, fairly new tires make it rather like a train on tracks, it will not spin the wheels even if you drove in yogurt. With old or el-cheapo tires, you can pretend you're a stunt driver in a hollywood police chase scene...!

The only difference I've really felt between single taper leaf springs and multi-leafs is that the single ones are a lot more bouncy on speedbumps. But then again I've got the heavy duty dampers fitted on the single leafs and light duty ones fitted on the multi-leafs...

PS: Won't you post a crazy burnout video?

Fun with sheets of ply

Made a start laying 10mm ply on the floor: done in 4 pieces to get the floor & a panel across the bulkhead out of 2 sheets of ply & an offcut -

Centre and rear pieces are screwed down already, the centre pieces needing 10mm packing along the edges of the wheelhouses to keep things even. Front piece needs a flap cutting out for over the battery cover before it can be screwed down.

The fun bit was working with 8x4 sheets of ply outdoors in 40mph gusts of wind after the rain stopped. Ever so nice to have an even floor though - the steel floor ribs can be painful on the knees...
