Bedford Thambulance resto mission

Thought I would start a project blog on the resto progress of the ambulance.
Unfortunately the more I delve in, the worse it gets but, hey ho it will be done!
Picture that reminds me it will be worth it when it's done:

Pictures of the damage leaving it in a field and bodgy repairs has done to it......
I'm not sure what wadham stringer were thinking when they botched on additional panels without any consideration towards protecting them against corrosion. Virtually everything metal they have attached to the cab has disintegrated! Somebody even thought it was acceptable to rivet bits of ally over the rusty bits!

Yikes!

You know when you look at something from a few paces and ask, well how bad can it be?.....

Thanks for the parts offer..... Do you have a spare.....Cab?:o
How bad can it be?? Well I think from this point on it can only get better hopefully!
This is what I have been up to over the past week....
I work on it on the occasional evening after work at our unit so at least it's warm and dry.

Cut some floor out

Then watched all episodes back to back of 'A 4x4 is born' on discovery turbo and decided that I needed a Mark Evans like work ethic and that project ambulance would be getting the full overhaul treatment:

Can't decide whether or not to go full engine strip and rebuild?
It did sound like it ran ok when I loaded it on the trailer but I have literally heard it running for five minutes so who knows!! I have got a full top and bottom gasket set off eBay and a new exhaust manifold gasket. They look like excellent gaskets. £51 delivered for the lot.

You've made a good start.

I'd love to have a project like yours to work on, If I had a decent lock up to do one I would.

Good luck with yours, and you don't find to many problems.

Done a bit more on th'ambulance....embarrassing welding photos follow....
Cut out a bit of the chassis leg that was rotten and welded in a new bit.

Not wanting to waste good thick metal I robbed a bit off an oil boiler I took out last week.
Handy corner bit too!

Also cut this bit out at the front of the chassis leg and welded in a new bit

I have done this with my tig welder as this is all I did have powerful enough for 3mm metal
It was a complete pain in the neck so I decided to ditch the frankly awful sip 105 I have and buy a nice 155 amp Cebora mig off eBay!! Nice!! Should provide more inspiration to do something too.

Got a bit more done on Saturday. It seems to be very much one step at a time!
Loving the new welder though, it's a pleasure to use.
Finally started putting some bits of metal back on rather than cutting bits off!
I'm going to brush on some seam sealer before painting.

More welding coming this week. Plus a new charger for my decent camera, rather than using my phone for pictures.

Thanks for all the positive comments, thought I would update the blog as a bit more has been achieved.........
cut this bit out

welded this bit in, it was a right pain as i needed it to extend under the fibreglass body.

needed to fill this big gap in

made this bit

don't think it will win concours....ahh well

couldn't be bothered to do this bit as it was boring and fiddly but it had to be done

finally an interesting bit!!

got the seam sealer out which is my new favourite thing!

etch primed up...

The curled under bit picks up the fibreglass outer panel, will probably use some of those plastic panel pin clips (that always break) to pin the two panels together, that is unless someone has another ingenious soloution other than self tappers, rivets and nuts and bolts?
On to the nearside door step now.........what joy........there is so little of it left I have no idea what it used to look like, made even worse by the fact that the fibreglass step is sat on whats left. Think I will have to come up with my own (probably angle bar) step soloution???

Woah.
Seeing stuff like this is inspirational and daunting in equal parts. I would never have the skills, the time, the euipment, the know-how or the courage to do this.

Bravo. Looking for watching your van come back to life as mine slowly falls apart hahah.

Thanks for the replies guys.... As for welding anything other than my own tat: I wouldn't inflict my lack of skills on anyone elses wagons unless they really did not care!;D
Jeffo, not sure I would have started it if I had looked at it properly, but I was already smitten!
