MPG etc? Any owners of Fiat Ducato based motorhomes/campers out there? If there is what engine do you have and what sort of MPG are you getting? Is there much difference between the 2.5d and 2.5td where motorway cruising is involved? What sort of performance/mpg do you get with the 2.0l petrol? Any common rust areas? Hmmmm.....basically what are they like---------------------- | Thu 05 May 2011 @ 18:11 |

Hi there Colin,my Mum & Dad had a Ducatto 2.0l petrol camper with a Holdsworth conversion for about 10 years and it went very well with very little down time. They actually bought it to replace a 1974 CF pop top! They bought it from an Aussie couple that had toured all around europe with it for 12 months without a single break down. The only probs Dad had was a series of oil leaks from the engine, which I think was more to do with the inept garage they used (one of dads old friends who still thought secondhand was best and cure was better than prevention) rather than a fault with the van. The main problem was the body work, from the day they bought it til the day it finally had to go,they were always having to get little patches welded here and there. They got rid of it a couple of years ago when the mot garage told Dad that it would never get through the following year without a major welding job underneath. When we started looking for a camper last year we went to quite a few dealers to get ideas of prices and the story was the same at all of them. "if you get a Ducatto,or one of the variants Talbot Express etc, that has been pampered you won't go wrong, but if you get one that has got the tin worm you have got problems". In fact we know of a long wheel base Ducatto with an Autosleeper conversion that looks the dogs swingers but the garage can't sell it because of the amount of welding that it needs underneath so they are breaking it. Hope this helps,Cheers Derek & Lyn | Thu 05 May 2011 @ 19:26 |

Thanks for the info. I'm toying with buying a 5 berth Ducato. I just haven't got the time to rebuild the CF plus with the kids getting older I really need a bigger 5 berth van. The 2.0l petrol Ducatos motorhomes seem to be going for a good price. I would rather a 2.5 turbo diesel. Just have to see what's around. ---------------------- | Thu 05 May 2011 @ 21:50 |

Hi there Colin,I had a quick word with my dad today about his old Fiat camper and he was full of praise for the way it drove etc. He said that the mpg wasn't too bad for a high top but he did say that the spares were an issue. A lot of what we reguard as normal wear and tear items were getting hard to find, even from main dealers and that was a couple of years ago so I don't suppose that things have got any easier. hi there we are on our 3rd Ducato / Express. They do have problems with rust in the wings, sill and rear arches but at the moment all panels are available. We currently have a 2.5d on a J plate. Its doing 32-35 mpg and pulls well upto 75mph.Drives really well even without power steering, good breaks and very good turning circle.Any parts we have needed so far have been available of the shelf at the motor factors. Some interior trim is very hard to find and early headlights are becoming rare / expensive. We will be coming to Pickering steanm rally is you fancy a drive / look over. re ducato Hi ColinI have a Hymer, 2.5 TD Fiat Ducato. Its pretty peppy and probably doing about 3o+ ish mpg. I love it, very easy to drive with power steering and air ride susp. I drove my sisters kontiki which has a Fiat Ducato 2.0 petrol, no comparison although it was ok but probably a bit thirstier. margaret ---------------------- | Sun 08 May 2011 @ 22:24 |

re ducato Hi ColinThe Swift Kontiki can sleep 6, they are very popular and not as expensive as the Hymer. You would need a bigger Hymer than I have as mine only sleeps 3 and most are LHD although I was lucky enough to get a RHD. Probably buying one at the end of the season is best as you could perhaps pick up a bargain. There are loads of people buy a motorhome then realise its not for them..... Hope you find what your looking for....and I'm sure your better half will have the final word ! Margaret ---------------------- | Sun 15 May 2011 @ 23:08 |

Forced by old age to upgrade to a `van with substantial toilet . Got a Talbot Express (`91) for a decent price. Swift Kontiki 5 berth, double, single and upstairs for brats. 2.5 diesel no turbo 28+mgp and +100K ON THE ROAD. that's 60MPH for us ENGRISH. Added power steering and it`s ok . I`m told that turbo is thirsty, so as there is only room for one thirst !!!. No unexpected probs. Spares are easy got, fitted new headlamps this winter. Might make the U.K. if ferry prices mirror the diesel, (no chance).`94+ is the upgrade with power steering built in, needed it. ---------------------- | Wed 20 Jan 2016 @ 12:23 |
