Is there an ariel plugged in? Does it work if moved to the house? Is it a digital TV? If not then you'll probably need a digi box as most, if not all, of the UK is now digital. What make and model is it? ---------------------- | Thu 13 Sep 2012 @ 20:17 |

Hello Guy, I always found directional arials work far better than omni-arials. Having said that, I've not watched TV for about three years and I can safely say the only thing I've missed is live MotoGP. Rae & Ann ---------------------- | Tue 25 Sep 2012 @ 23:39 |

cheers geoff Yes there should be a 12V supply to it. Check the instructions at http://www.busyoutdoors.com/product_pdf.php?id=136 ---------------------- | Tue 25 Sep 2012 @ 23:53 |

My original thread seems to have disappeared so I'll write it again. As we're on the subject of televisions, we carry a 19" household flat screen DVD/TV which we use if we're at rallies and it starts raining (heavy). This is a 240 television working through a 12 volt invertor, how inefficient is this? We have contemplated purchasing a 12 volt TV/DVD but is it what it says on the tin or is it a 240 with a 12 volt invertor built in? Rae & Ann ---------------------- | Wed 26 Sep 2012 @ 00:22 |

Hi Rae & Ann, Using a tv through an inverter uses more power than using one straight from 12volt,I think I can safely say that all tv's run on 12 volts although the supply to them is 240volts they have a built in unit that drops the voltage to 12volts. I have recently purchased a 12volt tv it has a mains lead with a unit dropping it to 12volt that connects to the tv. http://www.kogan.co.uk/shop/category/16-24-led-tvs/ you have to purchase the 12volt adapter lead seperately if you haven't got one. Now, in theory, if the telly runs on 12 volts, is there any way I can bypass the 240 bit? Rae & Ann ---------------------- | Thu 27 Sep 2012 @ 00:17 |

Hi Rae, I'm not sure on that one although it could be possible, on tvs you have 240volts going in to a transformer then 12volts coming out to supply the tv best to take the back off an old tv and with a multimeter check were the 12 volt comes out from the transformer and connect 12 volts there making sure you get the pos/neg the right way around. Its like computers you have 240v going to the power supply then most of the components running at between 3&5 volts. Probably not as simple as that. Nearly everything these days uses switch mode PSUs so no nice chunky transformer to look for. Also a lot of things use +12v, -12V, +5V and possible -5V too. I'm not sure about the inverters for the back lighting. Plus using the TV with engine running could cause problems with voltages reaching 14.5V. The only sure way is to look for a TV designed to run on 12V. ---------------------- | Thu 27 Sep 2012 @ 18:05 |

Colin Birch wrote: The only sure way is to look for a TV designed to run on 12V. Hello Dave and Colin, Thank you for your replies. As I'm not an electrical genius I think I'll stick with what I'm using at the moment and look out for a 12V DVD/TV; unless there's somebody out there that has converted a 240 to run on 12 without using a seperate invertor. If there is, would you like to share it with us? Rae & Ann ---------------------- | Thu 27 Sep 2012 @ 21:08 |
