a couple of issues help needed please

hiya chaps

not long till I set off overland and have some issues with the big girl

first being the clutch some times its fine other times I have to pump the pedal to get pressure there are no leaks that I can see and I have not lost any fluid .

secondly im running a perkins 4108 with a 4 speed gearbox with overdrive the problem is every now and then its as if I have dropped a gear ( id be driving at full speed and it kind of stalls or drops a gear then its ok (BIT WEIRD) I drove 120 miles today and it happened 4 times and as I have a 1132 mile journey ahead I don't want it to be a breakdown issue on the way.

any help and or advice would be greatly appreciated

many thanks

first
sounds like the master cylinder seals are failing.

second.
could be an electrical fault on the overdrive system dropping out.

thanks gethin

guess I need to suck in my belly and wriggle underneath the big girl

am I right in assuming that the master cylinder is the one underneath the bonnet with the reservoir attached ???? if so its a Lockheed unit, to your knowledge are there seal replacement kits available ??

just checked through all my manuals even the CA and none of them have a hydraulic system fitted

now looking at your photo I see that the rubber pipe connecting the master cylinder and the reservoir has perished at the cylinder side. mite be worth changing this first ..........

didn't think it was standard as not much really is on my van (perkins engine ,transit gearbox :)
I still havnt managed to get underneath to check the overdrive yet was issing down yesterday all day then we had the man & van come to take our stuff over to Poland .
will head upto Halfords tomorrow and buy a piece of hose after changing it will I need to bleed the system ???

the good thing about the bloke that had it before me was that in my Haynes manual he wrote down all the part numbers and what they are from in the back BUT it was backed away about 3 months back :/ I know I know DUH

Yes you will have to bleed the clutch system of air , but its just a matter of opening the nipple on the slave cylinder next to the bell housing and watching for air coming out ......
