Proving the date of manufacture/changing tax class

Afternoon all. I'm just going through several incorrect steps in trying to get the van registered as tax free. First I was told by the DVLA to go to the post office. The post office sent off my V5 to get the class changed to 'Historic' but that came back today (1 month later) with a further set of instructions.

The V5 shows first registration on 4 Jan 1974, so I know the manufacturing date was in 1973 (new tax rule says free if before 1st jan 1974). Can anyone in the club access the records to give proof of when it was built?

The process is then to send a V10 form with a valid MOT certificate back to the DVLA (accordign to the guy on the phone today...). let's see if that works

Thanks to Gethin for proving my date of manufacture. Bad news. Even though my date of registration on the V5 shows 4 Jan 1974, Gethin thinks that was pre-booked in advance of the van being built to get the production figures up. Actual date of manufacture would have been some time after. Vin number indicates 1974 build date, therefore another year to wait before tax free.

Gethin, could you post the info showing which part of the Vin number shows manufacturing year and the list of codes (for interest of others) or is it already listed somewhere on the site?

According to the government web site (https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-exempt-from-car-tax) 'You don’t have to pay vehicle tax on vehicles made before 1 January 1974 (known as ‘historic vehicles’).'.

Note the word 'made'. The VIN must date the manufacture of the vehicles as before 1 Jan 1974. To check a CF date use the CF-UK VIN checker at http://cf-uk.co.uk/vin/vin.php
