Hey Guy, It really depends on the engine and what sort of application it is for. Zenith used to make a lot of original equipment carbs for all sorts of car manufacturers. I guess they were cheaper in the old days for manufacturers to use, rather than Weber carbs, which I'd say are better quality and much more tuneable with all jets generally removable and different sizes available. But then it all comes down to the condition of the engine and carb. A stock engine with the original equipment Zenith in good condition should work fine without any problems. When fuel injections started to get more popular in the late 80's, early 90's, you could get Weber replacement carbs for a lot of older carb equipped cars. Still do, but the cost is sometimes more than the cars would be worth if it's just for a daily hack and you're not restoring it. http://www.webcon.co.uk/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=604&cat=Bedford Are you still trying to work out what's going on with yours regarding fuel consumption? If you want I'll pop round and have a look at it to give you a bit of guidance. I'm actually a mechanic by trade but don't work on motors anymore. Just doing garage doors and electric gates now for a living. My '67 drag race VW Beetle and old Yamaha XS650 are my other toys. And I'm restoring a '74 South African VW Puma for my daughter too. And still got loads of jobs to do on the Aventura before the spring. I'll PM you my number, give me a ring if you want. Frank | Tue 03 Mar 2015 @ 19:14 |

Carbs HI Guy,the Weber carb was put on the cf2 as an up grade so both carbs will run your engine as long as the jetting is right.Cheers Jim.---------------------- | Sat 10 Dec 2016 @ 20:27 |

Has anyone in the group ever experimented with a side draught carb on a slant engine? ie SU or Stromburg? I believe they were occasionally fitted in some of the cars that used this engine so manifolds are available. It would be interesting to know if one of those would improve the fuel consumption significantly. Mike | Tue 13 Dec 2016 @ 11:28 |

If you fancy a swap with a standard manifold and carb I would jump at the opportunity. Mike | Wed 14 Dec 2016 @ 12:32 |

Stromberg Hi Mike,I was until recently building a manifold to take a Stromberg carb by adapting a standard Bedford slant four manifold using an alloy swan-neck, which would allow the carb to be supported over the top of the manifold. Accelerator and choke and fuel lines where worked out for space and worked well but due to resent events I shelved the project. The Stromberg carb has proved to be one of the best variable jet carbs on fuel delivery and miles per gallon once set up and tuned using an air to fuel balance kit. doujoy ---------------------- | Wed 14 Dec 2016 @ 20:26 |

LOL thanks for the polite reply, I didn't really think you would. In my past experience with triumphs and BMC cars using these side draught carbs they are quite a bit more economical than the fords etc of similar capacity that used downdraughts. Mike | Thu 15 Dec 2016 @ 12:49 |

MPG Hi,when I ran my cf in the 80s I had it Kripton tuned every 6 mths, the mpg was 20+ so I think if I can find a garage that does this tuning I will give it a go.Maybe you could try in your area Graham.---------------------- | Sat 17 Dec 2016 @ 18:26 |

Tun up If you can find a garage that still uses one it should cost about £65 in the 1980 it cost £35.The main prob is finding one!Cheers JIm.---------------------- | Mon 19 Dec 2016 @ 21:17 |

Guy,there's a company in Weymouth that call themselves Crypton Tuning.Whether they have the older machines I don't know.Worth a phone call though:01305 784 106. Failing that,try the manufacturer .They should have a record of where their machines are. ---------------------- | Fri 23 Dec 2016 @ 10:59 |
